I was playing with someone and he invited me to a game with a few friends. Everything seemed okay until I noticed a teammate was offline. Nothing suspicious at first, but when I asked if they used Teamspeak, they said no—actually they mentioned using Ventrilo. I thought I’d heard of it before and clicked a link, but when I opened it, nothing happened. After downloading, launching it didn’t work. They sent me an IP address once I got online. We talked about the issue and they gave me another link, but it didn’t help. I tried rejoining, talking to them, respawning, but nothing appeared. Later, I checked my Steam history and found a user with that ID—most of his items matched mine. It was strange since he wasn’t playing with me. The person in the game made a suspicious comment, and I left. I deleted the files, ran antivirus, changed my password, but couldn’t report it to Steam. Help needed!

I looked it up and found Ventrilo’s site seems genuine, but they required the specific version they provided.

Avoid downloading unless you're certain about the content. Steam won't assist you.

He got his stolen things back again. I checked it myself and confirmed it’s a real thing. Still, I’m still not understanding it fully.
