Current issue: My machine isn't starting up. Debug lights indicate DRAM status. Overview: I attempted to upgrade from a Ryzen 4500 to a used Ryzen 5900X. After installing the 5900X, the system powers on but doesn’t boot properly, repeatedly flashing the DRAM indicator every few seconds. Switching back to the 4500 works fine. Details: The seller had no red flags and claimed smooth upgrades to AM5. I’ve reviewed and tested items 1-16 in "How to respond to a no POST," including removing all PCIe cards except the graphics card. I’m aware Ryzen performs memory initialization during boot, so I let the system run for about half an hour, but it still loops. I’ve tried adding one RAM stick, reset the BIOS by touching the battery connector, and verified the BIOS reset message appears when I reinstall the 4500 with a working system. I’m seeking advice beyond these steps, as I’m not stuck with a non-functional CPU. Specifics: CPU model Ryzen 4500 → 5900X RAM Corsair Vengeance 8GBx2 @3200Mhz Mobo MSI B550 (BIOS version 7C56v1C, MSI site says 5900X compatible since version 7C56v17). GPU RX 5700 XT.
Do you have attempted to upgrade to the latest BIOS while using the 4500, or is there another BIOS version available?
I've just set up the 5900X, connected the jumpers using a screwdriver, yet the issues persist. The update completed last evening didn't seem to resolve the problem.
Start by removing the system from wall power and fully removing the CMOS battery. Keep the power button pressed for 10-15 seconds, then release it. Reinsert the battery and power on the PC. If the CPU remains unresponsive, repeat the steps but replace the 4500 with the 5900X while the machine is off. If the 4500 works but the 5900X behaves differently in BIOS settings, you're stuck. Have you checked for any bent or damaged pins on the 5900X?
The interesting aspect was that the original 4500 had bent pins, but I’ve straightened them so there’s no need to insert anything. The 5900X has performed well physically from the beginning. The attached photo shows the 5900X. I might keep this post open for a week before selling it as a tested, non-working unit.
There could be some thermal paste on a few pins. For instance, the pin near the left edge of the bottom row looks lighter than the others, and similarly for the pin in the second row behind the paste. A thorough wipe with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol followed by drying overnight might help remove it. Beyond that, I’m really unsure. I’d rather not prematurely conclude it’s a dead CPU without expert input, and I don’t want to give up on this issue. @dizmo, are you still there?
