Repeated crashes due to heavy CPU usage
Hey, I set up a new setup at the beginning of the year because I'm a grad student needing constant heavy CPU and GPU workloads. Recently, I've experienced quite frequent BSODs, mostly when the system hits maximum CPU usage. Sometimes the machine freezes completely, even with Caps Lock pressed. Usually, I see error codes in the crash screen that I can't fix myself. I haven't overclocked my CPU, everything runs at auto speed in BIOS. The CPU temperature stays around 70°C during full load. These crashes occur in both Windows 10 and Linux environments. I've updated the motherboard and GPU drivers, boosted fan speeds to lower temps, swapped out RAM. My hardware specs are: Intel i7 9700K, MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PLUS, Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super Jetstream, 2x Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB at 2666MHz, Corsair CX650M 650W PSU. It's really frustrating since at the start of the year I could run long calculations for 24 hours without issues. Now, when I start a simulation, after about 15 minutes everything freezes and I can't retrieve the results. It's also happened in games like Apex Legends but not in Dota Underlords (which uses around 20% CPU). I've looked online and think maybe raising the CPU Vcore could help? How would I adjust that in BIOS? Would updating the motherboard firmware assist? I'm still using the same model as around March.
I just pushed the overclock and it resolved my issue. When I set the Vcore too low during overclocking, it caused the same crashes I described earlier. It seems the default or auto settings on the motherboard weren’t providing enough voltage. Now I’m running at 4.9ghz and everything is stable.
