I've confirmed all components function properly before using them. I went through the process earlier, testing with just RAM and CPU, but got no response. I disassembled everything to look for issues like loose connections or metal contact problems. Still nothing found. Right now I think the motherboard might be dead since the CPU isn't adjusting its temperature. I tried running it without a cooler to see if it would heat up, but it didn't change. Likely the connection is faulty. I won't attempt a fix if it seems too complicated, just trying to bring back a board that hasn't been used much.
Identify the bent pins and note their functions. With a DVOM, you might also verify if the VRM is powering up.
Thanks for the helpful comments! I really value your patience while I work through this. I just placed an order for a multi-meter since I didn’t have one handy, which will let me test it. Concerning the noises, smells, and other signs—my friend didn’t notice anything unusual. He missed a post once and it’s been inactive ever since. I haven’t detected any strong electric smoke odor, so it seems unlikely anything burned. I’m still unsure though. All capacitors and VRMs appear normal. He mentioned a loose capacitor, but I don’t think soldering issues have affected me so far. With my limited background in electrical engineering, I’m hoping they’ll show some signs if something has overheated. The PCB looks intact overall. I’ve traced most traces away from the CPU socket, but I can’t remember the exact pins anymore—they seem straightened up now. The ones near the RAM slots were mostly there, though I noticed one in the small circle was bent.
This might indicate a power spike or drop happened during the night. It could have disrupted the CPU's ability to get power. If the CPU remains cool, it might mean the CPU VRMs aren't receiving power either. You can test if they're warning by letting the system sit idle briefly. If the heatsink stays near cool, we should investigate higher up in the system.
The small circle pins connect to the DMI bus, managing communication between the CPU and chipset. Most of the low-power signals are handled with VSS, meaning touching pins would probably just discharge them. It seems unlikely this led to lasting harm in the chipset motherboard. Probably just a coincidence.
