Hi everyone. I own a 2019 LG Gram laptop with Windows 11, and the shift key on the left side of the keyboard isn’t working properly. Pressing it works fine, but pressing the right side doesn’t. The keyboard has backlighting, so I’d like to take it off to check for any debris, but I’m unsure how to do that without risking damage to the keys or the lighting. My main concerns are:

1) the best way to remove the keycap carefully
2) possible causes of the issue and possible solutions
I don’t want to cause any harm to this nice laptop and haven’t found a helpful YouTube tutorial. Thanks.

The keyboard on those models is quite delicate, with random keys failing frequently. As a result, replacement keyboards are readily available everywhere, and non-backlit options are priced around $30. This means you’d likely need to replace the entire keyboard rather than repair it.

The replacement procedure is more complex compared to most laptops, so consider whether you’re comfortable attempting it yourself. LG estimates the cost at $500 for professional service, which seems excessive for a six-year-old laptop.

If you can’t locate a similar broken laptop at an electronics recycler, the safest choice is to consult someone who has replaced a broken keyboard before. Alternatively, you might take the risk and replace it yourself—some keys may detach easily, while others won’t, but inspecting the keys from the edge can help determine if reassembly is feasible. If you’ve already tried that, reinserting a new keyboard is straightforward.
