I couldn't return to a working keyboard setup to open a terminal. It transitioned from the post to the log screen, but after logging in it displayed an error about 'cinnamon' not being found and offered a default desktop, which never appeared. Just a cursor on a black screen. I reinstalled XFCE and everything worked fine.

They're about the TTY keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+F1 through F7). These function independently of any DE, WM, or X server.

Any screen even if you have no screen at all lol. I use it often whenever my desktop is frozen and nothing worked. It is always my last go to step before hard rebooting. cinnmaon is mint’s flagship desktop btw. It is more feature rich and customizable. I use a custom theme on my cinnamon and the desktop look absolutely glorious.

I enjoyed Cinnamon, though I mentioned earlier it was too demanding on a 2GB memory setup. After logging in, I tried to access the desktop but nothing functioned properly from the keyboard. It was frustrating.

Yeah, I know what you are talking about. I used to have the same issue once after an apt-get —auto-remove command had mistakenly uninstall cinnamon somehow, I had no idea how that happened. Lol. Crtl alt f1 will exit you out of the black screen and into the terminal so you can fix the issue. you already reinstall the distro so no use talking about it now but you may want to remembered that hot key, it is incredibly useful. Generally, lighter desktop enviorment is barebones basics, lacking many features, utilities and pretty eye candies such as animations, themes, widgets ect that heavier desktop enviorment have. Same rule applies to distros, they are generally very minimium in features in order to shrink down to such tiny size. It is up to you to decide if you want feature rich or light weight. cinnamon fits into 2gb very well. I don’t believe cinnamon had an update since 18.2 Sarah either. If your ram usuage went up after distro upgrade,it might be other issues.

Use a tiling window manager such as i3wm for better efficiency.

I understand your perspective. I wasn't suggesting IceWM, only letting @EPENEX know that i3wm isn't the best fit here. It feels like you're looking for something straightforward without any complications. i3wm offers a lot of customization, which might not align with what you're aiming for.
