Using only bootrec /fixmbr won't resolve your issue. You should also run bootrec /fixboot and if that fails, proceed with bootrec /rebuildbcd to restore the boot configuration. If none of these work, consider reinstalling the system.

All the suggestions I tried didn’t help, but I now understand that after installing Kali Linux I had to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS. I only tested turning it back on to see the effect, and I was relieved there wasn’t a rescue message from GRUB. It just started booting directly into the window.
