I recently discovered this during an overclocking session, and it became clear how important thermal paste and heatsink contact really are. Initially, I used inexpensive generic thermal gray from Amazon paired with a Hyper T2 cooler, which allowed my OC 4.2GHX fx 6300 to reach 67°C on Prime95 blend. Thinking about replacing the cooler, I ended up getting an Artic Silver Ceramique 2 and achieved impressive outcomes.

you usually see a 5-7'c boost with a good paste. personally, i use mx4—it's just as effective or even better than what i've tested, and i've tried several options.
