I used to enjoy the game as a child constantly. I was trying to locate a digital release but couldn't find one. I checked CD options, which were expensive—often over $90 for just the game. Anyone else recall playing it or using it on today's computers? Are there any current compatibility problems?

Hey there. Lionhead Studios developed Black & White and the company shut down in 2016 under Microsoft's ownership. The game is no longer in development or release, and according to current info, there are no digital versions available. A physical copy would be the only option for downloading and playing it. Spoiler alert—there aren't any legal alternatives. I've checked some sources, and it seems Black & White isn't compatible with Windows 10 natively due to DRM restrictions. There might be workarounds, but they're not officially supported. Personally, I enjoyed the game despite not being a skilled player.

It's disappointing the game isn't available on Steam or GOG. It has a well-known history. I'm curious if using an XP compatibility mode might resolve some problems.

Hmm, unclear. The linked Reddit discussion and related information suggest the Secure Disk Encryption for SafeDisc on Black & White conflicts with or is turned off in Windows 10, as well as Windows 7/8 with Update 3086255. It appears the issue isn’t mainly about older operating systems but rather about trying to use a legacy protection that was intentionally removed. It looks like the disablement stems from security concerns within the software itself. Be careful if you decide to re-enable it. Source: SECDRV.SYS Not Loading in Windows 10 on Microsoft Community, Black and White by Play Old PC Games. Edit: You might consider using a Windows XP virtual machine. I don’t know for sure, but I have no VM experience. Idea stolen from How to Make Old Programs Work on Windows 10 ("Run Games That Require SafeDisc and SecuROM DRM" Section) by HowToGeek.

It's a leftover release, but you'll still need the community update to run smoothly on newer systems.
