It's mainly about the server side. Several 1u and 2u servers employ risers with two ports that connect to one x16 port. I haven't encountered this setup in a gaming machine before.
The B550M DS3H is confirmed by the manual, and likely many similar devices as well. With NVMe becoming standard now, this becomes even more applicable. Newer AMD graphics cards often require PCIe 4.0 lanes, making extra bandwidth valuable. Still, using multiple slots on the motherboard remains a sensible approach. The riser splitter is attractive, but fitting it into a standard case is challenging.
PCI-E riser cards were built for rack-mounted servers. However, vertical GPU kits allow you to "rise" as well. Someone recently installed their GPU along with two NVMe SSDs in just one PCI-E x16 slot featuring 12700k.
I've been looking into this for a while now, thanks for sharing. I thought my CPU could handle PCI-E Bifurcation (Skylake i7/6700), but my motherboard (Q170m) didn't support it. The grounding pins are positioned far from the CFG 5 and 6 points on the 6700, so I guess you'd need to work around that by connecting via a short wire in the socket.
