Typically during Windows installation you get to pick the partition where you want it. In my experience setting up Windows 10 I had to wipe all existing partitions so Windows could generate new ones on the boot drive. Making a backup is always wise when you can.
That's what I usually do: just wanted to find out since I had to perform partitioning using cmd because I created some extended and logical partitions and I didn't want to repeat that. In a few hours I'll understand more.
You cannot place a Windows installation on a dynamic volume when other volumes are configured to span or mirror across disks. Ensure you choose the appropriate partition during setup, as the installation will erase the selected partition while leaving others unchanged.
My configuration is like this: MBR on C drive (with OS and primary partition) and D drive (part of the extended partition, holding all my data and logical partition). About 1.5 hours ago I began reinstalling, but nothing happened. Now we understand: installing from the original Windows 8.1 OEM DVD won’t erase your partitioning. Thanks to everyone in this discussion!
