Hey there! I’m Lemi, a 21-year-old from British Columbia, Canada. I’ve been using my PC for upscaling and editing 4K video clips for clients. Recently, I switched from a Threadripper 2970WX to a Xeon Gold 6230. It’s been a big improvement—no slowdowns during encoding or processing, and I’ve noticed some solid gains. My AI upscaling speed jumped from about 0.23fps with the older board to around 0.44fps with the new one. For my AI work, that’s a noticeable boost.
I was initially unsure because the newer model is older, but it offers better features like Hex Channel memory. I’m planning to buy 384GB storage for a reasonable price, which will help with memory shortages. The Mini SAS and Oculink connectors will be useful as I move toward U.2 drives and more SATA storage instead of relying on my old NAS from the mid-2010s.
Looking ahead, I hope to get a cooler like the Noctua LGA3647 and maybe a Radeon 7900X next year. If it works, I’ll run this system for several years before thinking about upgrades. The 2970WX had some minor issues but was otherwise solid.
Pros: Affordable build with ASUS board, Xeon Gold 6230, decent RAM, good PCIe lanes, and support for future upgrades. Cons: It’s EOL, older platform, no PCIe 4, and some BIOS quirks.
I’m excited about the potential, but I’ll keep an eye out for any tips or suggestions to improve this setup!
