You can switch the CPU without major issues, but ensure your system boots correctly. The temporary setup should work as long as the motherboard supports the new chipset and power requirements.

It varies by board model. Z170/270 supports only Kaby Lake and Sky Lake versions.

The top CPU available for that motherboard is the 7700K, matching a 3300X, though it comes at a higher price.

I'm just relying on the i3-6098p for now, until the new motherboard arrives in stock.

I experienced a blue screen of death right now following the CPU change, so it’s unclear whether the issue is from the CPU itself.

This platform is outdated and offers limited value. For better performance, consider a 4c/8t CPU with decent IPC. A B450 Pro4 with a 3300x would be ideal. If you prefer staying on it, a used Z270 with a 7700k is the last option available.

Consider a B450 tomahawk; even a B550 model would improve performance. It offers stronger power without a significant price increase. A B450 Pro 4 or a B550 Pro 4 will definitely cover your needs.
