Hello everyone, how are you? I'm just joining and chose to sign up because I enjoy the content from Linus Tech and hope to assist as much as possible. My main work involves programming and the stock market, and I specialize in creating expert advisors using MetaTrader 5. I'm looking for the fastest possible connection, but I've noticed that someone I know has a better option with fiber optics offering speeds of 3 to 6 ms. My setup uses DOCSIS 3.1 with a Technicolor modem, which gives me around 10 to 20 ms depending on the device. Previously, I used an Arris with a Puma 6 chipset and got similar speeds, but with my iPhone XR on Wi-Fi I reached about 20 ms. Wi-Fi isn't reliable, but it's worth considering a faster connection via Ethernet using Cat8 cable. The Vention brand offers Cat8 cables, though I currently use a different configuration. My system runs Windows 7 Professional, originally purchased, and now I'm using Windows 10 Pro. My RAM is 4 GB DDR2-800, which is limited, and I'm struggling to find two 4 GB RAM sticks in DDR2. I suspect the Realtek card might be the issue, even with the latest drivers, since it's quite outdated. Switching to an Intel offboard Ethernet card could improve performance. What do you think? Is this a limitation of the platform, Windows, or DOCSIS 3.1? Please help me figure this out. I really need at least 8 ms for the EA to execute orders quickly.

The platform reached its end of life ten years ago. It has been replaced by W10, but it still has limitations. Upgrading to a modern system would provide the low latency you need. Good luck!

I wouldn't rely on such an outdated setup for tasks requiring performance. These kinds of systems work well for NAS and media servers, but not when speed is critical. Your PC should handle Windows 10 smoothly even with just 4GB of RAM. Do you have a mechanical hard drive or an SSD? If it's the former, that could be why Windows 10 struggles.

I own two hard drives—one Seagate Barracuda with 250 GB and another WD Green 2 TB.

Windows 10 has performance problems with mechanical hard drives, but works smoothly on SSDs.

But when I tried it with 6 GB, the same tasks required more RAM. I own two units—one without a GPU but with a P5K-Se, and the other with a P5QL-Se. I like the latter for its ICH10R and 1.600 MHz FSB support. Still, it’s tough to locate two 4 GB DDR2 modules.

Windows tends to consume more RAM when resources are available. Just remember, RAM isn<|pad|>, it’s not the main issue with Windows 10; the hard drive is the real concern. I once had a Windows 10 setup with just 2GB of RAM running heavy tasks, and it handled okay with an SSD.

The Ethernet connection improves significantly when switching to Windows 10 with the newest drivers, even with a Realtek from the 775 platform. The ping performance also changes noticeably compared to using the older Realtek drivers for Windows 7.

Ping is significantly quicker and I’m happy with that. However, because I rely heavily on multiple computers and require maximum CPU usage for MetaTrader 5 calculations, I’m considering an Ethernet card to prevent network data from being handled by the CPU, which would slow things down. A suitable option? Which brand and model work well with common PCs or are they limited to servers? Please suggest.

Regarding the second point, I’m wondering if JMicron, Marvell, or another dedicated controller can handle my newer SSD from Patriot without issues. Since JMicron appears in Asus P5QL-Se and Marvell is used elsewhere, I assume compatibility is high. But as it’s a dedicated unit, I’m not certain. My goal is to reduce reliance on the motherboard and focus more on CPU performance, especially with future upgrades. Also, I’m using Sata-III and currently in Sata-II mode—another reason to invest in a better controller. Thanks for your support; you all made a huge difference! Have a great day! God bless!
