I don’t trust charging over 90 dollars for an operating system. Someone suggested buying it on Reddit and shared this link. Is that person trustworthy? How safe is Reddit? This is my first visit, so I’m a bit unsure. Are there other legal ways to get a cheaper OS? My build info: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/28L4cf

Consider Seasonic or XFX options, or EVGA G2/GS instead of that PSU. People pay a lot for games at launch but can’t afford $90 for an operating system that lasts their whole computer. Windows hasn’t gotten any pricier since it was $99 in 1986—every year it’s cheaper than the last.

Sure, the $80 discount indicates a better upgrade for your setup. Appreciate the guidance on the PSU!

You might consider trying Ubuntu. It's open-source and offers extensive support options.

The issue lies in Ubuntu needing users adapt to new concepts, as not all features function smoothly there. Plus, it's not widely adopted, which means many games and tools still rely on Windows compatibility.

Similar points apply to various topics. You might purchase an older version of X game instead of the current one. You could save on the case and invest more in the GPU. Keys shared on Reddit are often stolen or mined—Dev keys or volume licensed. Even OEM keys purchased secondhand violate the EULA. There are methods to obtain Windows legally for free or at a discount. Your school, university, or workplace might provide you with a product key (such as 7, 8, 8.1, or 10).

Use wine for Windows applications. In terms of learning, I believe giving it a shot will make it simpler than you expect. I gave it a try and realized it was straightforward within a day. It’s only slightly better than OSX when it comes to ease of use in my view.

If you refuse to pay for an operating system, then you aren't ethically justified in running it. Choose Linux or skip the OS entirely. Or break the law if you wish.
