Recovering a slow personal computer.
Recovering a slow personal computer.
Recently, I’ve noticed a significant decline in my PC's performance. I’m experiencing difficulty with Battlefield 1 at any graphical setting, previously capable of playing on ultra with a consistent frame rate of 70 fps. Battlefield V is playable only at the lowest settings, achieving 60-90 fps, and World of Warcraft also suffers from low frame rates. Approximately a year ago, I performed a fresh Windows installation to resolve similar issues, which resulted in a substantial performance improvement. However, after several months, as evidenced by the reduced fps in games, I believe my computer is no longer operating optimally. I’m considering another complete Windows reinstall. My PC appears somewhat dusty and I plan to clean it promptly; however, temperatures remain below 70°C during gameplay. Before proceeding with a full system reset, I would appreciate guidance on whether I'm inadvertently causing the problem or if there are adjustments I could make to restore my PC’s previous performance.
Here is a listing of my hardware specifications:

While it didn’t fully combine those elements as intended, it’s acceptable. Moving on… UserBenchmark indicates a significant amount of idle CPU activity. You can easily check this by opening Task Manager and identifying/closing any processes contributing to that usage.
Due to poor system operation, there’s an underlying reason for this sluggishness. Considering you've reinstalled Windows 10 and the problem persists, I believe it may be related to software. Which antivirus program do you employ? Certain ones can consume significant amounts of RAM.
Let’s begin with a video addressing performance slowdowns, noting that uninstalling applications won’t substantially improve speed but will free up disk space.
I haven't installed any antivirus software; I simply rely on the Windows built-in protections. Following a sudden decline in my computer’s performance, I investigated using UserBenchmark.com and discovered that my processor is operating below its potential. Unfamiliar with troubleshooting this issue and unable to locate relevant guidance, I turned to this forum for assistance.
UserBenchmarks Results: Gaming 88%, Productivity 76%, General Use 49%
Specifications:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 – 70.3%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 – 97.6%
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB – 110.1%
HDD: Seagate Desktop SSHD 1TB – 105.8%
RAM: HyperX Fury DDR3 1600 C10 2x4GB – 50.6%
Motherboard: MSI B85M-E45 (MS-7817) – Above 60
That didn’t quite combine those elements as desired, but it’s acceptable. Moving on… UserBenchmark clearly indicates elevated background CPU activity. You can easily check this by opening Task Manager to identify and terminate any resource-intensive processes if possible.
That resolved the issue on usersbenchmark.com. Previously, I could play Battlefield 1 with over 70 frames per second on maximum settings, but now I’m experiencing performance at a low level. This occurred after a fresh installation. Are there any steps I can take to regain those 70+ fps on ultra?
