Among the most recognized tools is Audacity.
It offers free access with numerous capabilities; it allows recording whatever you're hearing right now, modifying existing audio files, saving in formats like WAV or mp3, eliminating some background noise, and more.

Do you have any idea where the settings are located? I'm having some trouble finding them.

Usually...
You might face some difficulty adjusting it initially, but once you commit, it works great.
Audacity offers its own community forum that has been very useful for me:
Audacity Forum
The Audacity Help Forum
forum.audacityteam.org
The online help documents are also quite comprehensive... It's been around for a while, around 15 or 20 years. I'm running a version from 4 or 5 years ago on Windows 10 without any problems... version 2.1.3.
