Recommend a new VPN
Initially I relied on Private Internet Access after Linus suggested it, but when they were acquired I moved to ExpressVPN based on some site recommendations. However, my connection speed has decreased significantly. Now I’m using a 500mb fiber connection and can download between 71-72mb/s without a VPN, but with ExpressVPN I’m only getting around 9mb/s. I’m curious what others are currently using and recommending. Thanks.
VPN connections tend to be slow and rely heavily on server capacity. When servers are busy, performance drops significantly, even if the connection speed is modest. A 9mbps server will deliver roughly the same experience regardless of your ISP speed. For everyday browsing, using a VPN isn't worthwhile unless you need to bypass regional restrictions.
I rely on NordVPN and rarely experience significant slowdowns, especially during downloads. This varies based on the server you connect to and the protocol you use. I personally find NordLynx (WireGuard from Nord) to be excellent, so I highly suggest using it. The only limitation is supporting up to six devices per account.
I personally use Nord and have never faced any problems. I remember there was a security concern once with a compromised server, but since I had a 3-year subscription, I didn’t want to lose the money I’d already spent. My typical download speed is around 52mb/s in Australia, and with a VPN I usually see between 46 to 48mb/s. If you decide to try Nord, check out current offers. I recall getting a good deal when I bought my subscription a while ago—there was a cash-back offer and I only paid about $60 for three years, which is roughly 60 cents a month in USD.
VPN relies on the server you connect to and the protocol used, as well as the distance between them. In today's world, it's always recommended to use a VPN.
You're just making a purchase for the sake of it. The website is already safe with HTTPS/SSL. With SSL, your browser and site stay encrypted. Try testing your speed with a VPN versus regular connection. Not all servers perform equally, even close to you, and advanced protocols can cause issues if the server gets overwhelmed.
In the US, your ISP collects your data and can limit your internet speed based on what you do. HTTPS isn't reliable. I check my connection with and without a VPN, seeing a 5-15% drop when using double VPN. Not every server is fast, and speed varies by service. This isn't a universal rule for all providers. Plus, some US ISPs may slow your connection if it's encrypted—though I haven't experienced that yet. Welcome to the modern world.
I personally rely on VPNsecure.me. Excellent offering with numerous server options. Strong stability, compatible across various devices including MacOS, Linux, Windows, Android and iOS.
