I prefer using a single matched RAM package or dual channel setup. You should be able to use the 1600MHz kit your friend provided.

What is the age of the PSU?

Have you confirmed the BIOS was updated before upgrading the processor? Also, check if the socket has any bent or damaged pins?
What operating system are you using? You should still be able to run the iGPU without a dedicated GPU, as the I7-4770 includes one. Just note that for Windows 10, the OS may automatically download chipset drivers based on your platform, which can lead to the BSoD issue. I switched to my 4th generation Intel system in April because I was exhausted from troubleshooting.
I'm using Windows 10, according to the BIOS I updated around 2020. The Corsair CV750 is three months old, and I've checked that there are no bent or broken pins on either my main (Asus H97-Pro Gamer) or spare motherboard (MSI B85-G43 Gaming). My system didn't start after I set it to safe boot on the next boot, which also failed to boot into BIOS.
It seems I've changed the boards once more to an MSI B85-G43 Gaming motherboard and retained two HyperX RAM DDR3 8GB at 1600 MHz. My system is now booting up and functioning properly, though I suspect the i7 4770 might be failing and one or three of my spare RAM modules are also deteriorating. I plan to test again on another date.
