Sure, that might happen because sometimes the updates come quicker than expected, and it's not always the content patches that lag. It's annoying, especially since they keep releasing updates without a clear stop. I used to think patches could be handled in stages, but I never imagined it would be this way. If it keeps going like this, I'll probably skip buying more on Steam—this has been happening rarely in my experience.

It doesn't seem to be tied to Steam specifically; likely the same experience will appear on other platforms too. The FS2020 update on Steam isn't much better than the native version, and CP2077 on Steam offers a similar issue as GOG's release. We might have to accept this if we want to play on PC.

It could be the games, but it's absolutely 100% Steam. A fresh 5.3GB season update just arrived in Destiny 2. My friend installed it in just over a minute, while mine got stuck in "Pre-allocating space" for 23 minutes—writing 200+MB/s to my SSD. Later edit #1: we’re on the same internet connection. Later edit #2: it also took me a minute after that step.

Have you experienced any issues with the SSD?

Mostly wondering why SSDs eventually lose performance after many writes. >.> It might just be fading over time.

6 months, yet the results are solid. My friend quickly bypassed the "Pre-allocating space" step in under a few seconds. Removing that hurdle, both our upgrades completed equally fast. However, my Steam took about 23 extra minutes to fully erase my SSD (likely wrote over 50GB).

The SSD has a significant amount of space available, offering at least 10% to 25% free capacity.

It's a 20% discount (plus the unallocated components SSDs include in their firmware), but I don't think the SSD is responsible here. It seems the system is handling heavy writes—150-200MB/s over 20 minutes for a 5GB update—without any issues.

I discovered a solution online. The fix involved accessing Steam's settings, navigating to Downloads, and using the "Clear Download Cache" option. Restarting Steam as an administrator resolved the slow updates and improved performance significantly.

That's interesting! I haven't come across it much anymore—I mostly stopped buying those games. I also removed Tekken 7, which was the worst offender, and I won't buy another Namco title anytime soon. It seems both the games and Steam's actions are the main reasons. But if I see it again, I'll give it another shot. (Does it actually log you out of Steam? Probably.)
