i think you're conflating things. because without the microcode those updates don't really do anything yet.

It's not the security patch. I'm using a Core i7 930 with an SSD, and I didn't notice anything unusual... (games are too demanding for my PC even at normal settings, so I didn't bother testing, but everyday tasks are okay). It seems like a driver is missing. Try reinstalling your motherboard chipset drivers. Remove the graphics card drivers, restart, and then reinstall them again. (Just in case, though, it might be the GPU drivers). If that doesn't work, check Task Manager to see which processes are using the CPU.
