I recently switched from a 1080p 144Hz display to a 1440p 240Hz model (M27q-x). I'm experiencing random blackouts on the screen when using DisplayPort. When connected via DP, it powers down whenever hardware acceleration is enabled—usually for about a second, similar to input changes. Photo editing programs like CaptureOne also struggle with slider adjustments unless hardware acceleration is disabled. I replaced the included cable with a new DP1.4 one, but the issue persisted even at 60Hz. Changing the FreeSync setting didn’t help. Interestingly, the problem disappeared when using an HDMI 2.0 cable at 120Hz. At 144Hz it reappeared. This wasn’t an issue with my previous monitor, and while higher resolution shouldn’t strain cables more than lower ones, I’m curious if the RX580 graphics card is affected by this change. Its specs don’t look like they’d handle 1440p well, but it’s not ideal for gaming with this setup. My system runs a bit outdated (RX580, Ryzen 2600). Could it be that the RX580 is the cause and is having trouble with the new resolution? While an RX580 isn’t great for gaming on this monitor, its specifications don’t seem to prevent the problem. GPU specifications indicate a DP 1.4 cable specification. The original cable used with the monitor had no labeling, but the new one claims to support DisplayPort 1.4. Input connection is rated DP 1.4.
It seems like disabling HDCP resolves the issue at 60Hz, but problems persist at higher frequencies on DP. This suggests the problem isn’t related to HDCP and might be due to bandwidth limitations on DP compared to HDMI. Since HDMI 2.0 offers less bandwidth than DP 1.4, it’s possible the GPU is constrained.
