I’ll begin with the computer specifications: operating system – Windows 10 or no OS, 64-bit not used, custom build, three years old RAM, 16 GB 3200 CPU, video card RX 3070, motherboard Asus TUF X570, power supply 850 EVGA, storage WD 850x (Gen 4) and Sabrent Rocket (Gen 3), both 1 TB. My friend wanted to upgrade his BIOS for a resizable bar, so he connected an external drive running the latest firmware. After updating, he couldn’t boot; only two Windows options appeared, one working but audio drivers were missing or disabled, preventing reinstall. He chose a clean Windows install since he planned to replace the CPU and had moved Windows from an old Dell prebuilt system. Initially, the drives wouldn’t accept wiping or reformatting. After some time, we managed to erase the drive and start the installation through the Windows Media Creation Tool. However, whenever we encountered the error “installation cancelled – changes not saved,” it would stop, warning that any modifications wouldn’t persist. Windows failed to prepare for the next boot stage. To proceed, he restarted the installation. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Disconnect all devices except the one you wish to keep active. Make sure there isn't a TPM installed, since this is Windows 10, not Windows 11.

Thanks for the idea, could you confirm if he's attempted it before? I hope something turns out okay.

Turned off all the extra storage devices and it fixed the issue! I’m glad it was easy, but I should have considered that earlier. Thanks!
