Hi, Right now 8GB ram sticks are substantially cheaper in the UK than using 16GB sticks to achieve the same capacity. I figured I'd order 4 sticks of Crucial Ballistix 3600, but I've been told I should consider cancelling my order as it can be problematic to run higher speed ram for four slots. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? Would changing to 4 x 3200 make a difference or should I be looking at 2x 16GB instead? One of the reasons I decided against 2x 16GB is the price is substantially higher vs 4x8GB. Any help would be appreciated.

It relies a lot on the motherboard you choose. Gigabyte chipsets have often caused issues with 3600, while MSI ones tend to work better.

I haven't bought one yet, but I'm avoiding Gigabyte so it won't be a priority. If it helps avoid trouble, I can cancel my Amazon order and get four 3200 units or two 3200 units. It doesn't look like the same price as the 16GB 3600 units.

Consider the MSI Z690-A Pro next. This chipset performs well with memory in my experience and offers good value for money (a friend is currently using it). It supports 4400MHz CL19 without needing any adjustments. For your existing memory setup, you can maintain it. In the unlikely event, you could lower it to 3200MHz, though this will depend on the savings from buying four 3200MHz sticks.

I thought you meant double the amount. It's usually better to have two sticks instead of four, especially at these prices. 3600MHz is perfect, but if you can only get 3200, that should work too.

I have the funds. £30 feels like a lot more than needed for the benefit of removing two modules. Still, if it prevents a lot of trouble, it could be worth the investment for your peace of mind.

You also have the opportunity to enhance the RAM in the future.

The problem arises when using two sticks, indicating a potential inconsistency between single and dual rank configurations. It appears the availability of dual rank 16GB modules depends on your purchase decision.
