I understand that the 1235u runs at 100 MHz slower for graphics, but beyond that, what’s the actual relative gap? I’ve heard that while the 12th generation is 100 MHz slower, the memory performance improves because it uses shared DDR5 instead of shared DDR4 from the 11th gen. So it’s unclear if this makes both systems behave similarly.
I’m not focused on gaming but on light photo editing with Lightroom (works with either processor/iGPU). I’m trying to decide between a Surface Pro 8 and Pro 9. The Pro 8 is roughly $300 cheaper than the Pro 9, but it has the 11th gen 1135G7 while the Pro 9 comes with the i5 1235u.
Other minor differences matter less to me, like the headphone jack on the Pro 8.
GPU has minimal impact on Lightroom. It mainly helps with displaying previews during the Develop adjustments. Other aspects rely more on CPU, RAM, and storage speed.
The 1235U offers about 20% better CPU performance, while iGPU performance remains nearly the same.
Note: GPU acceleration is only effective for certain tasks like AI masking, denoising, and lens blur. You'll see benefits only with a device that has a dedicated GPU.
