I stored my Steam and Battle.net directories on my NAS. Then I can transfer them back at 120MB each second if needed, and just specify the location in Steam after copying, rather than downloading from the web at about 1.2MB per second.

They usually prefer not to do that. Instead, they copy the games to another drive and reinsert them after reinstalling.
