I'm gathering parts for a new gaming setup and came across a warning from pcpp. It mentions that the G.Skill Trident Z Neo 16 GB memory uses a voltage of 1.45 V, which is higher than the AMD Zen 3 CPU's recommended max of 1.35 V plus a bit. The advice is that the chip might run slower to meet the lower voltage, or it could need a higher voltage. Should I stick with the current sticks or switch to CL16 memory (which lowers the voltage)? It's not a major concern. The 1.45V is above the standard but still safe for DDR4 RAM. More expensive RAM typically uses higher voltages because of faster speeds or improved timing, like in this situation. This note is just a reminder, which feels somewhat unnecessary.
DDR4 can run on 1.45V all day long. I really wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure that the memory you are getting is on the QVL of your motherboard. With high-frequency kits becoming more prevalent checking the official compatibility list is kind of important.
I'm using the same CPU and RAM setup all week. I've been adjusting it daily, and now it's running at 1.5 volts with a 3800 MHz clock. Temperatures are around 20-23°C above ambient during full stress tests like Memtest86 and Prime95. All four components are protected by the NH-D14's 120mm CPU fan, though only one intake is available. I started at 1.5v for 4000MHz and haven't adjusted it back yet. Since I'm running two 2x8 kits, I expect to stay near 3800/3833 for compatibility. I think I'll lower it to 1.45v once I'm satisfied and stop worrying about it again.
