RAM speed overclocking failed.
RAM speed overclocking failed.
Hello.
I'm just starting out with these overclocking topics and would love some guidance. Although my goal isn't to push the CPU beyond its limits, I want my RAM to operate at the expected frequency.
I have an Asus P9X79 motherboard with an i7 3820 processor running at 3.60GHz, and I recently installed new 2x8GB HyperX Predator 2400MHz DDR3 RAM.
In the BIOS advanced settings, the target DRAM speed is listed as 1600MHz, while the CPU turbo mode is set to 3800MHz—even though I haven't attempted CPU overclocking before.
Ai Overclock Tuner, Turbo Ratio, and CPU clock gen filter are all configured to Auto.
The memory frequency is also set to auto, but when I try to adjust it to 2400MHz, the CPU target mode changes to "All core target CPU turbo-mode speed 3800MHz".
The issue arises when I attempt to apply these settings and launch Windows. The system won't start, and after a restart, it displays an error: "Overclocking failed! Please enter setup to re-configure your system."
I have to revert the settings back to 1600MHz or the PC simply won't boot.
I'm unsure if I'm making a mistake or missing something, but I don't fully understand what's happening. Could someone explain why this is occurring and what steps I should take?
Thank you.
I would recommend using the XMP (AMD version) to configure your memory settings. The XMP profiles are configured in the BIOS. You should refer to the motherboard documentation for detailed guidance. Once XMP is enabled, usually you just choose the 2400 MHz profile and press enter.

In general, the standard menu choice in Ai Overclock Tuner is Manual. Choosing this opens additional settings such as XMP. Not every Asus UEFI BIOS is identical, particularly with AMD boards. You might need to search for the XMP feature.

Thank you for the quick reply. By the way, what do you mean by AMD version? I'm using Nvidia (GTX 690). Anyway, it seems to work. I was able to boot up with XMP and 2400MHz, and everything looks fine. A bunch of other settings appeared when I selected XMP, but I ended up leaving them at their default. Thank you very much! My mistake was thinking about an AMD motherboard; those have a similar option as XMP.
