I recently replaced my RAM on my desktop. I purchased two 4GB DDR3 modules and installed both, but the system wouldn’t boot until I removed one. Once I reinstalled it, both slots worked. Could this mean the second stick is faulty, or could a defective stick in a dual-channel setup cause the issue?

There is always a chance of mixing and matching rams not working, despite what everyone makes you believe. This sounds like one of them.

The issue is that mixing and matching doesn't always succeed. It could sometimes work. If I were you, I'd update the PC's BIOS. Otherwise, I should return the RAM you purchased and purchase a new one that matches your old specifications as closely as possible—considering factors like speed, voltage, and timings.

The system supports DDR3 and DDR3L variants. Have you verified each type separately?
