I received an old computer from a friend, with specs around 2013. I recently installed some new DDR3 RAM, but it doesn’t support dual-channel. The same issue occurred with the previous memory, so I assumed one of the modules was faulty. Surprisingly, the problem persists—only one stick works. Here are the details: CPU i5 2500K, 2×8 Mobo RAM, mini-ITX (brand unknown). Since Google can’t help, I hope you can assist.

Start with the reliable stick to test each slot. If it boots successfully in all slots, the issue likely lies with a faulty motherboard. Identify any defective slot by further testing, though rare cases may involve multiple bad slots. Next, use the second stick alone to confirm its functionality. If it fails initially, it indicates a problem with that stick. Once confirmed, insert the first stick into one of the working slots to resolve the issue.

Also I didn't fully understand everything. I tried the sticks in both slots, and it looks like only one slot works. It's frustrating because it's a mini ixta and there are just two slots.

The memory controller is located on the CPU. The connections are what enable the CPU to interact with other components via the motherboard. If a connection point is damaged, communication stops. When a memory channel fails, possible reasons include: the motherboard or RAM slot being faulty, the CPU (memory controller) malfunctioning, a bent or broken pin preventing signal transfer, or debris obstructing the slot.

One approach worth considering involves a gentle, controlled up-and-down movement of a moistened cotton earbud. Using either denatured alcohol or electronic contact cleaner, lightly rub the contacts in the socket. Repeat the motion a few times—twice or thrice is enough. The solution will evaporate quickly if you don’t overdo it. Personally, I usually spend 2 to 3 minutes, though I’m cautious about the time. It might not always pay off, but it occasionally works. If you don’t have denatured alcohol, a dry earbud can be used, just make sure no hair remains inside the socket.
