Hello. I’m looking for guidance on upgrading your system. You currently have an Xeon 1240 v3 with a 1060 6GB RAM module, aiming for smooth full HD gaming and streaming at 5600x resolution. The CPU should handle these tasks well, and you’re planning to upgrade the GPU later. I’m still unsure about the best path forward.
1. Memory options:
I’ve considered several choices. Ballistix memory is known for reliability and capacity. You can expect around 3600MHz/14GB per module, but actual performance depends on your specific configuration. The price you’re seeing varies, so it’s worth comparing specs before deciding.
2. Motherboard:
The GIGABYTE B550 AORUS ELITE V2 was a solid pick, though not the most budget-friendly. It offers good sound and overall build quality. If you want something more affordable yet still decent, alternatives like MSI B450M MORTAR MAX or ASUS TUF/ASROCK microATX boards are available at a lower cost.
3. External sound card:
You already have an ASUS Xonar DG sound card. While it’s decent, you might want to check if your current setup meets the requirements for 7-8K audio quality. If not, upgrading could be worthwhile.
The main concern is whether skipping the cheapest components makes sense. Since a mid-range GPU and solid RAM will likely suffice for now, investing in premium parts might not be necessary unless you plan to upgrade sooner. Upgrades are often driven by performance needs rather than cost alone.
If you don’t plan to upgrade in the next few years, opt for a B550 board to support PCIe Gen 4 for both the M.2 slot and your graphics card. There are many solid mid-range choices available. Notable models include the MSI Tomahawk, MSI Gaming Edge, Gigabyte Aorus Pro, and Asus Strix B550-F. For more affordable options, consider the MSI Gaming Plus, MSI B550-A Pro, MSI Mortor, and Asus TUF Gaming. Generally, any reputable B550 from a major manufacturer will work well with the 5600X, making it suitable even if you never upgrade your CPU. There’s no strong incentive to choose a B450 unless you find an exceptional price and don’t need Gen 4 support.
It really doesn't matter anymore; M2 and PCIe Gen4 aren't offering clear benefits these days.
Once they cease backing older gaming systems, it will happen. Many titles seem to show clear improvements in GPU performance now.
This means I was referring to upgrading again in 4 to 5 years or more. Currently, NVMe SSDs perform adequately for Gen 4 use, so daily tasks don’t notice much change. However, after four years it could impact features like Direct Storage. Limiting cards to eight lanes with the RX 6600 XT sets a cautionary example, suggesting future chips might face similar restrictions via PCIe Gen 3, making full performance only possible with Gen 4. This isn’t about today—it’s about preparing for tomorrow.
