I’m looking for advice on choosing RAM upgrades. You currently have 2x8 sticks at 3600 MHz, aiming for a 32 GB configuration. It’s unclear what options are best, but comparing 2x16 vs 4x8 sticks is a common question. Generally, more sticks can offer better performance and stability, though the difference may be noticeable only in demanding tasks. Consider your workload and budget before deciding.
It's a complex topic. The main distinction lies in the rank position you're targeting. Dual-rank memory boosts RAM bandwidth, which enhances speed. Using two single-rank sticks per channel makes the system function as dual-rank, leading to improved results. With one dual-rank stick per channel, performance remains consistent if frequency and timing are accurate. Currently available 8 GB modules tend to be single-rank, though technically dual-rank 8 GB units exist, albeit rarely. 16 GB modules offer a 50/50 chance of being dual or single rank, depending on the specific sticks. For guaranteed dual-rank capability, opting for four 8 GB sticks is recommended. To maximize speed, pairing two 16 GB sticks provides better compatibility and tighter timing. Certain models are recognized as dual-rank capable—particularly those designed for Samsung B die (preferred) or Hynix DJR. A 2x16 GB kit at 3600MHz CL14 indicates dual-rank status. A 3600MHz CL18 kit is uncertain, while a Crucial Ballistix 2x16 GB kit is likely single-rank.
Unless you're frequently limiting your 16GB and directing data to a swap file, increasing to 32 won't make much of a difference. And swapping two versus four sticks? Just add two more sticks with identical or improved timing compared to your existing RAM, and it should work just fine. There isn't enough variation to worry about significantly.
