Consider keeping the existing RAM for stability, or upgrade to more RAM for better performance. It depends on your needs and system requirements.

You can remove the old RAM if desired, but the system will only use the same from each stick. This is because you have 4GB in two sticks, and the system will read them as four 4GB sticks at a slower speed. As @aimi pointed out, this doesn’t make sense, but the system needs matching memory to work properly, so it makes all the memory identical. Understand?
