R7 5700X3D and ASUS Prime B450M-A
Hello everyone, I've been using a 5600x on my ASUS Prime B450M-A with PBO for two years. I'm curious if this board can support the 5700X3D, especially since you've heard the VRMs aren't great. My setup includes two intake fans, two exhaust fans, and it's on the CPU support list, which should help. Would this setup keep VRM temperatures in a safe range? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
It will be okay. You have good airflow, and the 5700X3D isn't a very powerful chip.
The X3D CPUs perform well with a moderate undervolt setting to reduce power usage and heat. Adjusting the voltage slightly shouldn’t hurt performance much. The biggest impact on VRM temperatures usually comes from proper airflow, such as a downwind cooler placed close by. The standard AMD coolers, especially the bigger models like the Wraith Prism, handle this well.
You're currently using a noctua NH-U12s Redux and considering pairing it with the Thermalright FS140. This setup should help manage VRM temperatures effectively. If you're still concerned, exploring additional cooling solutions like higher-performance thermal pads or a more robust case fan setup could further enhance cooling.
A cooler that blows air downward can assist, though I don't fully align with his reasoning. Strong airflow inside the case still provides benefit, even indirectly. I also think the VRMs aren't a major concern—they're more likely to act as a limiter.
