I chose the 2600 plus 580 setup. In about two years he’ll just need a GPU upgrade. If he picks the 3400, he’ll have to replace the CPU in roughly two years.

Support the idea of @boggy77 While agreeing, consider a more affordable $100 option. The $580 won’t reach any goals the $570 can, and they’re likely to become obsolete around the same time. It’s wiser to keep the $50 for a future upgrade that will eventually be needed.
