Quick Question
I might seem a bit confused, but it’s better to be cautious. I’ve configured port forwarding on a specific port for my server panel. I’m wondering whether having the computer that’s forwarded open will create a security risk or if it remains exposed only when the machine is active. I set it up so you can demonstrate it to a friend tomorrow. Thanks ahead of time, Jake.
All port forwarding simply tells the router which device on the network should handle data sent through that specific port. The security risk for the connected computer depends on what is actively listening on that port. If no activity is present, the operating system’s network layer should block the incoming data.
When someone hacks or exploits, the issue lies with the service or application itself. It's similar to a driveway that leads to a house—by opening the port you created, you essentially shut down the house. This analogy is a bit unusual, but it captures the idea well.
