I’ve installed my windows for a year now, and this is my first time working with a dedicated PC. I’m facing some problems that keep bothering me. I’m planning a clean installation and want everything—my files and game saves—to be ready for transfer. I’ve copied both my HDD and user folder, plus the SSD program files, but I’m worried about missing hidden folders. I also made a system image just in case anything goes wrong.

According to what I understand, you need to instruct Windows to back up all files and folders outside the main folders visible in the pinned section of File Explorer. You can enable backup for programs, but I’m unsure about the process for restoring them. The Windows backup tool differs significantly from macOS’s Time Machine.

I was actually handling the file copying myself. The main concern is keeping my game saves and mods safe. I don’t mind the apps themselves since I can re-download them whenever needed—it’s just about restoring the files.

I don't understand how it manages that. It would vary based on the game and its approach to moving files into folders.

Usually games can't be saved in that way, unless you duplicate your whole Steam folder—this works fine, though it requires admin rights for Steam.

Windows 10 lacks a comprehensive backup solution because it relies on fragmented tools and user habits, making a unified system difficult to implement.

I duplicate my whole C drive onto another storage device using a tool that functions, the fewer Windows 10 tasks the better my system performs.

I’ve checked every game and they function properly. Any issues steam doesn’t resolve, I’ll handle them myself.
