Hello everyone. I’m thinking about purchasing a new PC and am struggling to decide between a high-end configuration (4090 + 14900K) which comes with a high price tag, or a more budget-friendly option (4070Ti + 13th gen i7 or i9). I plan to use a 32-inch display. Right now, I’ve only played games at 1080p, so I’m unsure how much difference I’ll notice at 1440p or 4K.
My main worries about the 4090 are:
1. The chances of damage from usage or card failure – is this typical? If it does happen, it could cost me around £1,800. What warranty coverage does the GPU offer? I won’t choose Gigabyte because of their poor service.
2. Is this too much? Will a 4070/4080 card suffice for 1440p?
3. Running costs: With electricity prices in the UK being high, will this be financially unsustainable long-term?
4. Cooling: Could this build cause overheating issues during summer?
I also have several other questions about other components:
5. PSU: What would be the best power supply for a 4090 Asus Strix OC edition with a 14900K CPU? There are mixed opinions—some suggest 1000W, others recommend 1500W.
6. Case: Is a mid-tower model suitable for this build, or should I opt for a full tower? Can I go smaller than a mid-tower?
7. Monitor: If I plan to upgrade to a 4K display later, will the image quality drop if I stick to 1080p (like watching SD content on an 8K TV)?
8. RAM: How important is speed for gaming (5200/5400/5800/6000/6400)? What’s the recommended amount? For a 4090 build, is 32 GB enough or should I go for 64 GB? Should I choose 2x32 GB or 4x16 GB? Does increasing RAM size or speed raise power consumption or heat issues?
9. SSD: Will faster read/write speeds matter for gaming (4300 vs 6000)? Should I opt for a 1 TB M.2 for Windows installation, or a 4 TB 2.5" SSD for game downloads? Or is an M.2 suitable for gaming as well?
10. RGB: If I go with an RGB build later and decide it’s not to my liking, can I turn them off without removing or disconnecting them?
11. Boards: I’m thinking about the ASUS ROG Strix Z790-F as my custom build, or the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero (which is £200 more). Is one better than the other?
12. Price: Sorry if these questions seem trivial. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
If you enjoy action-packed or first-person shooter titles, consider a 27-inch 1440 monitor combined with an RTX 4080 or 4080 Super graphics card and a 1000W power supply unit. You can turn off RGB lighting and adjust SSD speed—this setup works well for gaming builds. A 32GB RAM package is more than sufficient for such a configuration.
