I have a Z390 Tomahawk, a 9600k processor, and an SATA SSD.
I’m thinking about upgrading to an M.2 SSD, likely a Samsung 970Evo or 980 Pro.
The main question is whether my current setup supports the required configurations—specifically, x16 for the GPU and x4 for the SSD.
I’ve checked the M.2, CPU, and chipset specs, but they all seem to say different things.
MSI mentions support for 3 x16 lines and 2 x1, while Intel claims the CPU supports 16 lines, though they still say the Z390 only allows 24 lines (limited to CPU).
Intel also has a statement about configurations like 1x16 or 2x8 or 1x8+2x4.
What does this mean for me? Can I install a single x4 M.2 without affecting the GPU lines?
My understanding was that total lines should be the sum of CPU and chipset lines, but chipset lines are slower than CPU ones.
There are two main categories: CPU PCIE lines and chipset PCIE lines. The chipset may include 24 lines, which are generally slower than the CPU ones. These lines are often used for USB, SATA, and other connectivity features. You likely have a dedicated M.2 slot that won’t impact your video card. Typically, these M.2 slots are integrated into the chipset lanes, and storage latency isn’t as significant compared to the GPU.
