My motherboard for the i7-8700 stopped working, but I’m still using my old i3-2100 with an h61 slot and DDR3 RAM. Should I sell the i7-8700 and get a decent price to add to my budget for a new setup like the i3-12100F or R5-5600G? Or would it be better to buy a used one (B360)? I’m mainly using it for casual gaming at 1080p 60Hz—mostly RPGs and RTS games, watching streams, and basic tasks. My current setup includes:
i3-2100
h61 motherboard
2x8GB DDR3 RAM
Seasonic M12 620W bronze rated
GTX 1070
512GB NVMe via PCIE adapter
3x3.5" HDD
Deepcool i70C CPU cooler
Would it be beneficial to sell the i7-8700 and purchase a suitable device at a reasonable price, adding it to your budget for a new platform such as the i3-12100F or R5-5600G? I’m considering upgrading to a newer system with the 13th Gen or an AM5 board.
Currently, I use this machine for light gaming at 1080p 60Hz, mainly playing RPGs and RTS titles, watching streams, and basic tasks.
Could you provide more details about the applications, games, and content that are using your current system?
What motherboard were you working with? Maybe you could try restoring the BIOS on the board in hopes of getting it back in working order?
your problems will arise if you swap the mobo (which should be done if your budget allows) and opt for mobo ram and cpu instead.
If your gtx 1070 still performs well, a 5600g (or the 1070 i think is better than the 5600g igpu) isn't necessary; it's wiser to choose an am4 board like 5600x or 3600.
On the Intel side, a b660 with a 12100f offers flexibility for future cpus such as the 13th and 14th generations.
Another choice is to go with a b660 12400f and consider upgrading your 1070 later.
Usually I go straight to mention an AM5 platform, but (and I have to admit I’m surprised) if the budget is really tight, a decent B660 LGA1700 could offer you up to 14th gen options at a lower cost! AM5 with DDR5 and even the basic 7600 isn’t cheap either.
