Hi, your mother's old printer appears to print text blurry, and you've already cleaned the nozzle and checked the ink level. I'm not sure where to find the installers, as online sources seem confusing. The HP support page for this model looks unclear. Is there a software update available, or should I just uninstall and reinstall it?
The main consideration here is that most colour printers allow you to select options when printing a document. For jobs that use only black ink, such as text or simple drawings, I advise printing in Black only for two main reasons. First, the printer defaults to using all colours, and choosing Black means it will print all four ink colours. This wastes the three colour inks and can cause ink to run unevenly. Second, it may lead to a slightly fuzzy appearance. Try to locate the Black-only printing option for text documents.
When dealing with colour documents that require all four inks, you should consult your manual for a maintenance procedure to adjust the ink nozzle alignment. Many printers offer an automatic adjustment feature that you can activate manually to ensure proper ink placement.
Regarding paper, previously special inkjet papers were necessary for certain printers, and high-quality photo paper is still recommended. However, for everyday tasks, most copier-grade papers should suffice, especially if they claim to be versatile. Cheap paper might not perform well due to insufficient surface treatment, which can cause ink to spread or blot.
If you're unable to print an alignment page, it could be due to HP's restrictions with third-party ink cartridges, especially non-genuine aftermarket ones. This printer was likely made before 2016, allowing it to work with such cartridges despite the "can't guarantee quality" warning. Newer models will either stop printing or damage the printer when using unauthorized cartridges, a safeguard known as HP Dynamic Security.
This security measure is meant to protect your safety and, incidentally, the company's profits. Avoid dealing with businesses like this. There have been numerous instances where I had to replace DRM chips in genuine HP cartridges with ones from empty units, as the new cartridges didn't function. Back in the day, HP products were top-notch and built to last for years—yes, I still use their 1990s printers that came with drivers on floppy disks for Windows 11. Those days are behind us.
