Questionbuying a computer
I know there are no definite plans for MS Win12 yet. As before, whenever a new Windows is released, I’m ready to upgrade.
I still own a computer (Intel Core i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz) that we’ve been using for years, running Win11. It’s our main PC for work, home, and internet. I’m hoping this setup will satisfy the requirements for Win12.
I’m considering purchasing another PC for my basement office. It would be used mostly for personal tasks like internet browsing, home use, etc. I play Serious Sam, and Croteam hasn’t announced any updates for the next series. When I play the adventure in SS, I switch between sections and stop playing afterward. So I mainly stick to SS. My biggest worry is whether this PC will support Windows 12 when it launches. Rumors suggest Win12 includes AI features—what does that mean for system requirements?
I found a PC for sale with 11th Generation components; would this be suitable for the upcoming version of MS Windows?
Intel NUC 11 (NUC11TNH) I7-1185G7
16GB RAM Memory
512 GB Solid State Drive
Windows 11 Pro
The latest Intel Core and Core Ultra 200 models are currently available. AI hardware refers to systems designed for specific performance metrics like TOPS, indicating their AI capabilities. Devices marketed with high TOPS ratings are typically labeled as AI chips. For better energy efficiency, specialized silicon such as a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is often used, alongside GPUs when needed. Windows 11 now includes AI functionalities, making it suitable for everyday tasks. The 1185G7 CPU offers decent performance but lags in the AI domain. I believe most current purchases won’t be highly relevant to AI applications in the near future. Future advancements are expected to demand significantly greater power than present NPUs and mobile CPUs. Remember that a NUC is essentially a laptop housed in a case, with upgrades mainly limited to storage or memory.
I've kept track of this discussion. I'm ready to submit another modest reduction. He'll either decline or agree, and that's fine for me.
