Question20-pin into 24-pin
Question20-pin into 24-pin
Can you fit a 20-pin into a 24-pin connection?
I checked an old forum from 2015, but it might be outdated now.
I’m working on a rack-mounted router and need a PSU that uses low power and has both 24-pin and 8-pin connectors. I just bought a Supermicro PWS-505P with 500 watts for my Supermicro X11SCL-F motherboard. Just in case I don’t find better options.
My question is, can a 20-pin work with a 24-pin connector? I also found the Supermicro PWS-203-1H which has 200 watts. With only a 20-pin it seems more practical than the 500-watt model.
Are the FSP FlexGuru 250w/300w and Silverstone FX350-G models in stock?
Even though it isn't considered ideal, I've applied this on several low-power systems and they've remained functional for years. The extra four contacts turning a 20-way connector into a 24-way setup add two +12V and two 0V wires, enhancing the +12V power to the motherboard.
If you're not relying on a very powerful CPU and GPU on that SuperMicro board, the entire system should likely draw under 120W from the wall and operate on a 20-pin supply (along with the separate ATX12V CPU power).
If the CPU can handle more than 100W and you install a GTX3090, I wouldn't suggest doing this.
The decision is yours—it's proven to work for me.
