Question Random CPU usage spikes during DirectX 12 rendering
Hello everyone, I believe my CPU might not be very recent, but by setting auto-quality on Fort and checking other configurations online, I should be able to run DirectX 12 rendering smoothly even at low FPS. I usually see around 60fps consistently, except during intense movement when CPU usage jumps from 40-50 to 100, which briefly makes the game unplayable (FPS drops below 1). This doesn’t happen with DirectX 11, so it seems my CPU could be a bit outdated. I thought it would be helpful to ask here for confirmation. It’s odd that the game runs fine at medium settings except when I’m sprinting or doing similar actions where usage spikes. My specs are: AMD Ryzen 5 2600, GeForce RTX 2070 Super, 2 x 8GB 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM.
System performance?
Storage space is sufficient?
Your system is fairly recent, but you might find it helpful to install a 3600 or 5600 depending on your motherboard. It's also possible the GPU is experiencing memory problems. GDDR6 includes ECC, which allows it to handle errors without crashing. Consider slightly lowering the GPU's clock speed and observe if that helps.
The CPU will be my next upgrade since I just upgraded to a 2070 super, though it could need a new motherboard because I currently have an ASRock B450M. Unless I update the BIOS, that might not be necessary. Memory usage never increases and stays around 8-9GB for all my games. I still have plenty of space—about 500GB left on my 1TB HDD, which matches the game’s storage needs. I plan to test the GPU by using a spare 2070 super to compare performance. These GPUs are new purchases, so I haven’t used them much recently.
Hard drive? That could be part of the problem right there. Is it a secondary drive? You may want to configure it to not sleep/idle. Might need to load something up from disk and it isn't spinning. If it is an SSD, disregard.
Most B450 should be capable of running 5000 series chips, you just won't have PCIe 4.0.
I didn’t expect the HDD to cause such an effect; it was just my CPU that spiked, not anything else. It’s a hard drive, and it’s probably a secondary one since I moved my system folders to the SSD. I can try reinstalling the game on the SSD to check if the problem persists.
It all hinges on the available game assets for preloading. It might not directly relate to the issue at hand.
However, running tests solely on the SSD will clearly show the outcome.
CPU usage may rise significantly due to frequent data retrieval operations.
