Question Random clicking sounds on my PC but I can't locate their source
The situation is quite straightforward, isn’t it? My PC is only a year old, all components are running with the latest drivers and firmware, and the operating system is current. Everything appears clean, and the thermal paste was recently changed about a month ago—so there shouldn’t be any issues. However, a few weeks back I relocated to a new location. I moved from a ground-level home, where heat and thick walls often caused temperature problems, to a ninth-floor apartment inside a large park. The climate there is cool and breezy, which is quite different. I’m unsure what exactly could have caused such a drastic change. Now, unexpectedly, my PC starts making a soft clicking sound randomly. At first, I thought it might be due to thermal expansion of a component, but the noise continues even when the PC is powered on and running. It’s very faint and irregular, coming directly from the machine, which makes me worried about potential damage if not addressed promptly.
I’ve tried opening the case and listening for the sound, but I haven’t found any obvious signs—no unusual LED behavior or visible sparks. There’s no strong odor either. I spent a lot of time trying to locate the source by checking cables, removing parts, cleaning everything, and inspecting for interference with coolers or loose screws. I also checked all back ports, testing each USB and Ethernet cable one by one, but nothing triggered the noise.
I’ve been monitoring the performance metrics to see if there’s any unusual activity when the click happens, but everything looks normal. I ran some stress tests with games and benchmarks, and everything functioned correctly. I’m really concerned about what might be causing this, fearing it could gradually damage other components and end up destroying my system.
PS: Whether I’m idle, browsing, or playing games, the click happens randomly—sometimes just one per hour, sometimes two in a row followed by silence. I’ve considered a disk failure (though it’s new, it might be faulty), but everything seems fine on HDSentinel.
What else should I do? Have others experienced similar issues? It doesn’t sound like a coil whine; I’m more worried about a short circuit or a bad relay on the power supply. I haven’t noticed anything unusual or smelled anything off, and none of the hardware seems to be malfunctioning.
UPDATE: After another disassembly attempt, I still can’t pinpoint the source, but I suspect it might be related to the back panel—perhaps an audio jack or USB port is involved. I’m also considering whether electrical tension issues could be responsible, though I don’t see or smell anything abnormal. The sound didn’t come from outside either after moving inside.
It was my initial assumption, but the noise seems to come from another place.
