Good Morning, Guys.
I’m planning to connect the ASUS DUAL-RTX3070-08G with an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini.
Because the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini lacks a PCIE slot and is physically smaller, the RTX3070 needs to be mounted externally on an m.2 to PCIE adapter.
The RTX3070 draws 230 Watts, which is more than the m.2 adapter can handle.
The adapter supports a 220 Watt Alienware power adapter.
Since 230 Watts exceeds 220 Watts, I considered using Afterburner to lower the voltage.
However, I have no prior experience with the RTX3070 or undervolting, which raises my first question: how much should I reduce the voltage to bring the power draw down to 220 Watts?
Secondly, can I safely overlook these spikes in power demand, and if not, what should I expect in terms of power needs (all 12V DC)?
I’m pretty sure you’re all curious about why I went down this route. The short answer is I already have everything in my parts drawer and I’d rather use them than let them sit unused or take up space.

This prompted many to upgrade their power supplies with extra capacity. Those who had an RTX3090 were later advised by industry reviewers to install a 1.2KW PSU that was consistently reliable. This wattage figure gradually decreased as you moved up the power tier, eventually guiding users toward an 850W PSU for an RTX3070. In light of this, I believe your plan to attach that GPU to an undersized U.S.FF unit would likely face strong opposition from the platform itself.
Now I’m fully convinced you’re curious about why I chose such a complicated workaround! The truth is, I already have every component ready in my storage area and I’d prefer to utilize them rather than let them sit unused or (shockingly) pursue an alternative solution.
Rather than wasting powerful components in a small enclosure, I’m confident you could construct a standard desktop platform (SFF) and sell or pass it on to someone else instead of spending effort on something that doesn’t fit.

Thank you for your response and the link. I think I'll need a significantly bigger 12 vdc supply. I'm aware that many people don't like my method, so I can only say "Different strokes for different folks!" I've tried this approach before, twice, with smaller GPUs, and the necessary adjustments make it worth considering. I'm also careful not to upset any members with this discussion.
