Question PC BSOD after upgrades - but only in one game?
Question PC BSOD after upgrades - but only in one game?
I'm working on a PC that my friend is trying to help with a diagnosis. During testing, the system randomly experiences BSODs while playing Star Citizen. It doesn't crash when playing other games, but during Split Fiction it reported insufficient GPU VRAM, requiring DX11 instead of DX12, and any increase in graphics settings caused an immediate crash.
I'll provide more details and DMP files tomorrow (May 17) once I have them.
Current specifications after upgrade:
Power Supply - RMX RM850X Corsair -80plus Gold
RAM - 16GB x2 DDR5
GPU - Nvidia Asus 4080 Super OC
CPU - Intel i9 14900k
Motherboard - Asus Z790 Pro Wifi 6E LG1700
AIO - NZXT Kraken X53 240mm
Operating System: Windows 11
Storage: m.2 1TB SSD, 5400 rpm 1TB HDD
I understand Star Citizen isn't considered optimized, but my PC runs it fine without issues. It's running a 3-year-old Ryzen 9 5900x CPU, 4080 Super, 16GB DDR4 RAM with a Corsair 120mm AIO.
I'm guessing the PSU might not be generating enough power, though the "PSU Calcs" we have suggest it should be adequate. The CPU does reach high temperatures occasionally—around 60s to 70s on average—but rarely exceeds 63°C. Star Citizen can handle jumps from 63°C to 100°C.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If this is following an upgrade, what were the previous specifications? When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's standard to list your full build details. Here are your specs:

Motherboard:
RAM:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:

Please include the age of the PSU and the BIOS version for your motherboard. Also, share the .dmp files if you have any BSoD issues.
On a side note, which other games has your friend installed?
GPU VRAM issues could indicate a problem with the CPU. If you stay careful about updating the BIOS, this might be the cause. It's something worth checking.
