Hello there. I'm working on fixing my friend's PC that stopped producing video unexpectedly. The setup includes:
gigabyte 760g mobo (ga-78lmt-usb3 r2)
fx 6300
gigabyte 1050ti
single 8gb ram
cougar vte 600w psu
The speaker was silent (no post).
I unplugged the GPU and connected HDMI to the motherboard, it booted with a single beep and displayed an image. I assumed the issue was with the GPU. After cleaning the PCI-E interface with isopropyl alcohol and trying again, no success. I swapped in another GPU and got the same result. Then I connected the original GPU and PSU to a low-end Fm2 office PC I had available, which worked fine. This suggests the CPU and motherboard are likely the remaining suspects. I'm trying to figure out which one is more probable.

Consider trying a different CMOS battery. Some boards behave sluggishly with a flat CR2032. ?? How did it begin to display an image? The FX 6300 lacks an iGPU. By the way, the couger vte is classified as Tier E and should be avoided on PSU cultists' list. These ratings are generally given due to insufficient reviews or unclear component quality.

Electrical performance issues:
Even without a failure, a low-cost PSU might supply unstable power with significant ripple and weak voltage regulation. This can cause system instability, crashes, and reduce the lifespan of other components.

Safety aspects:
Although the VTE series comes with basic safety features such as OPP (Over Power Protection) and OVP (Over Voltage Protection), cheaper PSUs might lack these protections in a more precise manner than premium models. A test on the 500W version revealed that the 12V rail ripple was above average, though still within limits.

Opt for a better PSU. The fm2 chip consumes less power, so testing it with a suitable PSU didn’t reveal major problems.

PSU Tier List rev. 17.0g - Cultists Network
This resource assists in selecting the optimal PSU from hundreds of options available. It covers everything from budget to top-tier power supplies.

cultists.network
Even if swapping the CMOS battery restores basic function, it might still be risky without a high-quality, reliable PSU. It’s not advisable to proceed with a new build unless you have a premium PSU. Quit now.

Yeah, the 760g chipset mobos do offer a barely functional GPU, which is useful for debugging. On IGPGU, it boots smoothly even without power. I also included the full MB name in the original post if it would assist.

There are still fewer bad PSU options available, likely not free or hard to find right now. I think it’s best to clean the dimm slots and contacts too. This issue was severe enough that I stopped touching the dims altogether.

For my old FX system, I managed to get all the necessary spares – a 4GB DDR3 kit for testing and another GPU. But that’s Murphy’s law in action; it never really mattered here, you know. Getting a board is just not worth the money either, even second-hand, since it only raises the price.

I could go with the 'bricked' option and suggest upgrading to a new PC, because these systems are outdated. With W10 retirement on the horizon and the $30 yearly maintenance after October 2025 not worth it, it’s probably time to move on.

Based on your testing, CPU and MoBo work, since you got it to boot with iGPU. But what symptoms show, is PCI-E x16 slot being bad.
Now, MoBo doesn't have 2nd PCI-E x16 slot where you can plug the GPU in. It does have PCI slot and PCI-E x4 slot. So, if you have the adapter at hand, you can try hooking GTX 1050 Ti into PCI or PCI-E x4 slot, to see if it works there.
Else-ways, you're looking towards new MoBo, IF you want to use dedicated GPU.
Biased and outdated list. Do not use.
Current, up-to-the-date PSU tier list is SPL's list.

Luke's list (in PSUCultists site) is biased heavily. Favoring Corsair the most while downplaying Seasonic. And it doesn't include that much in-depth info about each PSUs, like: ATX version, OEM, topology etc.
SPL's list is very detailed in that regard and i've looked it over in-depth and didn't spot any bias towards any of the brands, or downplaying specific brand just because.
Sadly, SPL's list doesn't include all older PSUs, despite some of the PSUs listed are from 2010. E.g it doesn't list Seasonic M12II EVO, that also came out in 2010. Or Seasonic G- and X-series. It would've been interesting to see how those old units would've fared. But that's a little concern, since at current date, no-one should be buying 10+ year old PSU platform regardless.
Overall, SPL's list is the best one i've seen in my years. Best part is, that it is also up-to-the-date.
Luke's list is outdated (2 years old) and doesn't include any new releases. While SPL's list does (if there isn't any good reviews of the PSU, you can find the PSU under the Full List tab).
Cougar VTE, with proper (un-biased) listing is actually low quality unit, borderline crap quality. Tier C-. So, not that bad as in Cultistsnetwork list has it.
Still, i agree that such PSU should not be used. Bare minimum: Tier B for such an old build. While Tier A would be much better.
