Question My SSDs & HDDs continue to disconnect.
Question My SSDs & HDDs continue to disconnect.
Hi,
I own an old Dell T7500 workstation that I've been using since 2012. It originally had four drive bays with two 500GB SSDs and two 3TB drives, totaling four drives. Now it only supports one SSD and one HDD, even when powered through the molex connector. The regular SATA port can't handle more than one SSD or HDD, and using standard SATA-3 connectors often causes disconnections, especially when writing large 3TB drives. I replaced the 1100W PSU in 2018 after it failed, and I've changed the SATA cables several times.
I'm wondering if it's safe to run SSDs or HDDs using molex power?
Is this issue related to the PSU? If so, how would a 4 or 5 Watt power supply affect an 1100W unit?
Are there any other factors contributing to these disconnections?
What is the age of this PSU? Is it correct?
It’s highly probable that the PSU, particularly if it’s frequently used for gaming, is close to or has reached its end of life.
The issue might lie in the overall power demand or sudden spikes rather than a single component needing only a few watts.
Consider thresholds: a normal total demand of X watts is fine, but the PSU may start to degrade and deliver X + 1 watts becomes an issue.
The same applies to sudden increases in power needs—what was once acceptable is no longer reliable now.
Even without playing games, the PSU is still a probable cause.
Activities like gaming, video editing, and bit-mining put significant stress on the PSU, leading to faster degradation. More affordable PSUs are used more quickly.
Check Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer.
You might notice various error codes, warnings, and informational messages. Windows typically managed most of these.
Focus on a growing frequency of errors and differences in their nature. Changes may not be obvious until you understand the overall trend.
Make sure all critical data is backed up at least twice, to separate locations from the system and/or drives involved.
Confirm that the data can be recovered and accessed properly.
I would suspect a 12 year old motherboard as well.
Instead of throwing money at it a more modern system would be in order.
