Question M.2_1(Socket3) executes exclusively at x1
Question M.2_1(Socket3) executes exclusively at x1
Hi there dear community people, I never resort to using forums for tech support or anything similar as I've fairly solved everything by myself in the years of dealing with computers, but I've exhausted all my resources so I've decided to extend my hand in the hope of someone reaching out and assisting me with my current issue, would be highly appreciated.
Let's address the issue: Installing my M.2 Drive on the CPU-lane driven M.2_1 Slot(Socket3) PCIe 4.0 x4 only runs at link speed of x1, no matter what settings and tests I've done, it never runs more than x1.
(The M2.1 Slot(Socket3) is the one closest to the CPU,
not using the Chipset of the motherboard
, if anyone is wondering.)
Current Rig
:
ASUS Maximus Z790 HERO
Intel I9-13900K
ASUS GeForce Strix 4090 (Installed on PCIEX16(G_1)
Z5 Trident 6000 MHZ 2x16GB (
32GB
) (Installed on A2, B2)
- Cooler, PSU, etc is irrelevant in this case, PC boots up and runs fine with no issues excluding the issue at hand (x1 speed on the NVMe Drive)
Storage:
Kingston FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD
(2TB) -
Issue at hand here.
Things I've tried
:
Installed the latest BIOS & Firmware of the new motherboard at hand
Changed the BIOS settings in Advanced under PCIE Express Configuration and Onboard device config to Gen4, made sure everything I can think of it changed.
Checked Drive's Firmware to make sure it's up to date.
Reset CMOS Bios couple of times.
Unplugged the CPU to make sure there's no dust/hair/anything of the sort in the socket and CPU itself, this can cause bus speed of x1 and even issues booting up.
Unplugged the M.2 Drive and attached it to the PCIEX16(G4) slot with HYPER M.2 card, changed bios settings accordingly but still x1.
Cleaned the M.2 Drive and the ports connected to it has no dust particles, hair or any kind of dirt.
Forced the PCIEX16(G_1) where the GPU is connected to x8/x8 in BIOS.
Unplugged the RAM and cleaned them and the slots as well.
No matter what I tried, the motherboard PCIE Express configuration shows the M2_1 is connected, but runs only at x1, it reads the drive perfectly, boots up windows, no issues at hand, HWinfo reports the same that it's running at only x1.
The current bios I am running are the latest by Asus, directly from their website
:
ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO BIOS 1402
https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-ma...desk_bios/
Updated the ME Firmware (this is unnecessary as the BIOS themselves updates it too, but just to make sure)
Updated all drivers as well using ASUS Armoury Create and other built in update from the motherboard itself.
Is there something I am missing here on the Z790 BIOS Settings? I've never had this issue at hand.
Things I haven't tried:
Using a different M_2 Drive, I currently have ordered one it's on its way in couple of hours, will update the post as we go. The Drive worked fine before my upgrade on my Z590 Maximus Extreme XIII (ASUS) and had no issues running it at x4.
Would appreciate any kind of information, no matter how little it is, thanks in advance.
Thank you for your reply, I will definitely try that, and use the Chipset lanes instead and see if that solves the issue, I will do some more troubleshooting as my other Drive arrives in 30 minutes, I'll let you know in then.
